Save money in the summer

It seems that going green is all the rage these days, especially when the Nickelodeon Network "Kid's Choice Awards" recognized actor Leonardo DiCaprio in 2010 for his green lifestyle, including expensive eco-friendly renovations to his house and driving a Prius. But not everyone has that kind of income, so that the vast majority of us have advantage of low-tech ways to take cool as we try to reduce costs and protect the environment in the summer.

A low-tech way is to wear clothes that are made of natural fabrics like cotton, hemp and linen. These fabrics breathe and keep moisture away from the body. Eat cool is another way (no, we do not eat food while wearing the latest trendy fashion sunglasses). Protein-rich meals are better when the weather is cold, because they warm up the body. In the summer you should dine on sandwiches and salads instead.

Staying hydrated is essential. The consumption of alcohol and caffeine on a hot summer day actually promotes dehydration. On days like these, you should drink more water than you normally do, and electrolyte replacement drinks if you sweat a lot. Water is the key to cool. Soak your feet in a tub of cold water and put on a wet bandana under a cold shower are all ways to combat the heat. Save your old spray bottle, fill it with water and keep it in the fridge, spritzing regularly throughout the day. Take refuge during the peak hot hours in your basement or in air-conditioned buildings such as the library or cinema.

There are also some low-tech steps you can take as well as to reduce costs around your home. One possibility is the solar shades or blinds that can shine light through but blocks up to 80% of solar heat. Keep all your windows, curtains and blinds closed during the day. You get south facing window the sun, while most of the windows on the east side get sun in the morning and west side get the hotter and more sun in the afternoon and evening. Open your windows for air circulation after the sun sets and the air cools enough in the evening.

Avoid appliances such as irons, washers and dryers during the day. You could be using your tumble dryer eliminate altogether instead of a clothesline. It is also a good idea to avoid your equipment between 4 and 6:00 clock, because it helps to prevent power outages. Outdoor cooking, you can give your stove and microwave a break. But if you can, use your microwave instead of your oven, because it uses two-thirds less energy.

You can also use a toaster for baking because it is small and not too much heat up the kitchen like a stove or oven does. In addition, you get your energy use cut in half. If you are not using your computer, turn it off! Leaving a computer or device running when they are not in use generates a lot of heat. Unplugging them will reduce your electricity bill. Use the power of these devices adds up over time, no matter how small. Make the change of infrared light bulbs to fluorescent or halogen. And we can not say enough about fans.

Placing a cheap portable fan in front of an open window when it cools down outside is to bring cool air inside. Another way to bring in outside air is by installing an attic fan. Even if you help with air conditioning, ceiling or room fans to circulate the air and allows you to set your thermostat higher. Finally, the refrigerators full of food require less energy to keep cool because they do not heat as fast when the door is opened.

While we may not be as green as Leonardo DiCaprio, there are simple low-tech steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint and save money at the same time....
