Here is why you should care: A properly built house or building, you can save money, improve your health and hopefully help turn around our environment, the falling apart quickly.
Sounds good? It should be, but before you go this route, please understand that there are several different perspectives on what truly "green." Do not take anyone's word for it. Spend some time and do your research. Several companies claim to green products that are environmentally friendly and will save you money and they are not and will not.
That's my definition of a green house or building. There are others out there, but I like this because I can relate to it.
A green building is a building or home, specially designed or remodeled to save energy, promote a healthy indoor air quality and have much less impact on the environment.
Green Building Construction began as a term used to describe whole house design and techniques that are environmentally friendly using sustainable materials and components. These days the media like to use it as a buzzword, even if the term does not fit or is a stretch.
If you listen to the following terms, they look interchangeable for the most part: green home designs, eco home, eco house, green house, green home designs, developing efficient green homes, eco friendly homes and environmentally friendly home.
There are also several organizations in your area that will give you guidelines and green certification. Do not really care most homeowners about certification and see no reason to pay the fee. I'm with them. What you care about is how to green building products will benefit you and your family or business. This is unique, which is important.
I like Green products that are going to save me money and are better for the environment. If they do not do both then I want nothing to do with them. There are many products that do both.
The certification I recommend above all others is the one used for the equipment, Energy Star. Products with the Energy Star logo are built to very specific standards and will tell you how efficient they are, how much to run and the energy savings you will get cost with them.
Most importantly, do not take anyone's word for it that their product is green, save money or improve your environment. Research and review. I know it's a pain, but it will save you trouble in the long run.
