Chevy wants a plug-in hybrid by 2010 In 2007, General Motors decided to take a leap of faith. The automotive industry is not really for his dramatic leaps forward and a willingness to lay it all on the line known, but GM is doing just that as they throw resources at the 2010 volts. GM is hoping for a plug-in hybrid (which works opposite of the way current hybrids - keep up with electrical energy primarily and relying on gas around the battery level) on the market by late 2010 or early 2011.
What do the different volts? Hybrids currently cruising our streets, such as the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic, are hybrids because they use gas to power the drive train and power is used to obtain a driver improve the miles per gallon. The Volt will deviate from this formula in a big way. It will have an electric motor and the gas is as a way to serve the battery is charged, gas does not turn the drive train and all, and so the car "driving" on pure will power.
GM plans for the Volt include:
- Being able to connect and charge from any standard wall outlet
- Term of up to 40 miles on each charge
- In "generator mode" (gas-powered) run the car in a position about 50 miles per gallon
- The ability to achieve a full charge in 6-6 hours and a half

Why is this such a big deal being considered? In an industry that often drag their feet when it comes to saving the environment blamed GM has taken a stand to be the champion of the new electric car. Having already failed in the 1990s with the EV-1, GM is a big risk with the promise of a hitherto undeveloped car in just two years. GM needs to build the battery for the power supply of this revolutionary car. Between engineering and testing, this could constitute a lengthy and expensive process - and then there is the possibility that GM can not follow through on its promise.
In addition to the science of it all, there is the advertising. GM's name was not inspiring confidence and trust in the last ten years. They have been slow to react to a changing market and suffered through costly strikes and internal problems. If this particular project is successful, it may be their ticket out of the hole they dug themselves. If it fails, well, at least they would have their competitors inspired us to go and build a plug-in hybrid.
The Chevrolet Volt will generate a tremendous amount of press. Try this link to track all messages volts, see more pictures, read updates on the Volt price (recently came to $ 40,000), and finally see the release date and availability of data.
The Volt will initially be released in California, followed by New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington DC, Michigan and Texas. 12 to 18 months later, almost all of the Chevy 600 dealers nationwide should the sale of hybrid car, the Volt....
