Remain as to the spread of cold and flu viruses naturally at home

How do you keep things natural and green when the dreaded stomach bug hits home? For a reformed junkie detergent, this can be a frightening idea. First instinct is to run for this good old bottle of Lysol spray and go to town on all surfaces and all, to stop the spread of germs!

This feeling only lasts for a fleeting moment, when you stop, take a few breaths, and remind yourself of all the reasons why you are not even that old bottle of Lysol under the kitchen sink more. Then take a few minutes to do some quick research to learn how to effectively disinfect your home in a way that is safe and does not cause problems for your family that go far beyond a small flu virus . There are some simple steps you can take to do with mixing a few quick cleaning recipes for the job. It's easy. It is feasible. It works and it's green.

Start by mixing up an eco-friendly, homemade disinfectant solution in a spray bottle.

  •     1/2 cup natural castille soap
  •     1/2 tsp. Borax powder
  •     1 cup distilled warm water
  •     1/2 tsp. Tea Tree Oil
  •     1/2 tsp. Lavender oil
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake vigorously to combine until the powder dissolves. For maximum disinfecting power, first wipe the surface with hydrogen peroxide before cleaning with homemade disinfectant solution.

Side note: I always have a spray bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide handy for disinfecting purposes. It is great to use on kitchen surfaces after handling raw meat. Follow up with a vinegar rinse disinfectant for one, two punch force!

Use your new, safer way to clean the disinfection heavily used areas of your kitchen and bathroom. These are high traffic areas in the home where germs tend to collect and multiply. Be careful not to neglect sneaky hiding places such as light switches, door handles and faucet handles.

More ... Practice good hand washing One of the best natural defenses of your family against the spread of germs is hand washing. Done properly, hand washing can eliminate cold and flu viruses in addition to a variety of other microorganisms. Remember to avoid "antibacterial" soaps. Some of the chemicals used in these soaps can be harmful and the "anti-bacterial" ingredients are not necessary. Washing hands with soap and hot water to all natural is as effective as it gets. Be sure to teach the kids the right amount of time needed to do the job. Once through the ABC song will do it and maintain it!

OPEN WINDOWS Not only that, she likes to ride also like to travel on contact, cold and flu germs through the air. Tiny droplets make these little bugs air, so it is important to help to open some windows, clean the air in your home. Even on cold winter days, opening windows for a few minutes at a time is enough to make a difference.

On the dirty side of things ... Chances are, if it's a stomach virus in the house, wash in high demand and it is not a pretty scene. Is it safe to wash these victims of the bug in your washing machine? The answer is yes. Although you may be tempted to quickly throw these items in the trash and forget you ever saw, as it is, it's not a very green choice-waste for the earth and your wallet. Clothing, towels and sheets, soiled with the germ, the fluids are safe and effective in the machine will wash with the addition of some simple and inexpensive ingredients.

1/2 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide added to the water when doing a load of whites has enough strength disinfectant to prevent the spread of germs. Because it has a bleaching effect, not add them coloreds, whites only.

1/2 cup white vinegar can be added to disinfect the wash a colored load. In addition to its germicidal contribution of vinegar can even increase the brightness of colored dresses, so it's a win-win! For extra cleaning power, go ahead and add some baking soda with detergent at the beginning of the wash cycle.

I hope you have a greener or two things today to help your family learn healthy this cold & flu season....
